Making the Invisible Visible: Celebrating Invisible Disabilities Week with the Hidden Disability Sunflower

Globally, 1 in 6 people live with a disability. While many conditions are immediately recognisable, millions of people navigate life with a non-apparent or "hidden" disability. These can range from chronic pain, fatigue, and neurodivergence to mental health conditions, sensory processing differences, and intellectual disabilities.

This Invisible Disabilities Week, we at Glenray are proud to highlight our ongoing support of the Hidden Disability Sunflower—a simple, globally recognised symbol that brings understanding, dignity, and inclusivity into everyday spaces.

What is the Hidden Disability Sunflower?

The Hidden Disability Sunflower gives individuals a discreet way to indicate that they live with a non-apparent condition. By choosing to wear a Sunflower lanyard, pin, or wristband, individuals can signal to staff, emergency workers, and the community that they may need:

  • Extra time when processing information, completing tasks, or communicating.

  • A helping hand or clear, patient guidance.

  • Understanding and respect without needing to disclose personal medical details.

It bridges the gap between those who need support and those who are equipped to provide it, eliminating the burden of having to explain complex health needs repeatedly.

Real Stories from the Glenray Community

Behind every Sunflower is a personal story. At Glenray, we’ve seen firsthand how awareness and non-judgmental support transform lives for our participants:

  • Amy: Navigating daily life with a non-apparent disability often means facing unseen challenges. Through the right support, Amy has gained confidence and independence in her routine. Read more about her story on our blog: Amy’s Story.

  • Nick: For Nick, having an environment where staff and peers understand hidden barriers has allowed him to participate meaningfully in programs without anxiety. Discover his story here: Nick’s Story.

  • Simeon: Simeon’s story highlights how crucial patience and tailored communication are in empowering individuals with non-visible conditions to thrive. Read his story here: Simeon’s Story.

How Glenray is Involved

As a disability support provider, we know that genuine inclusion isn't just a policy on paper—it must be an active, continuous commitment. Here is how our team actively supports the Sunflower network across our operations:

  • Staff Awareness & Training: We provide ongoing training opportunities so our team members understand what the Sunflower represents. This ensures our staff can identify the symbol and respond with empathy, offer tailored assistance, or adapt communication styles immediately.

  • Creating Supportive & Sensory-Friendly Spaces: We continually review our facilities to ensure they accommodate diverse sensory and physical needs. A key milestone in this effort is our newly completed Sensory Room at the Glenray Lifestyle and Learning Centre, providing a calm, low-stimulation environment where participants can unwind whenever they need a quiet space.

  • Free Sunflower Products & Resources: We want to make the Sunflower accessible to everyone in our region. Community members, participants, and families can pick up free Hidden Disability Sunflower lanyards, wristbands, and badges directly from our main office.
