Crafting Confidence at Glenray – Adam on Glenray’s Woodworking Program
[Glenray, Bathurst, NSW]
When you step into Glenray’s Woodworking program, you’ll find more than sawdust and timber, you’ll find creativity and community coming to life!
Adam, who leads the program, has seen firsthand how woodworking can transform lives. “The Glenray woodworking program is unique” he shares. “It’s not just about woodwork, it includes arts and crafts and above all, it’s person-centred in a safe and supportive space.”
Participants learn everything from naming tools and understanding their uses to basic design skills and hands on woodworking techniques. Over time, Adam and the team at Glenray Lifestyle and Learning program have watched participants grow in skill, project knowledge and most importantly, confidence. “They choose their projects, make them and feel proud of their creations. That pride is such a powerful thing.”
For Adam, the rewards are many. “I’ve been in this role for seven years, and the most rewarding outcomes are always the feedback from the participants. Their positive responses show just how much this program means to them.”
But the program isn’t only about woodworking. In group sessions, participants brainstorm ideas together, make decisions as a team and learn to share tools and resources, while ensuring everyone is included. In individual sessions, participants are involved in every step, from planning and costing materials, right through to creating and finishing their project. Along the way, there’s plenty of chatting, laughter and connection, all within a professional and safe environment.
Adam admits he enjoys the challenges just as much as the participants. “Sometimes their project ideas really push my skills as a craftsman and artist. But when I see the final results, I feel just as proud as they do!”
The program has even brought new participants to Glenray’s services, many of whom live alone and cherish the sense of belonging it brings. “Some look forward to it every week. For them, it’s more than an activity. It’s a boost to their mental health, their joy in life and their self-esteem.”
For Adam, being part of this journey is a privilege. “I believe the woodworking program is incredibly valuable because it offers something different, something special. It’s more than making projects, it’s about building skills, confidence and community. I feel lucky to make a difference in people’s lives through this program.”
When participants were asked for their feedback, they said it best:
“I have a great teacher. It helps me keep movement in my arm and relax.”
“It gives me a chance to show my creativeness… the happiest two hours of my week! It gives me something to look forward to.”
“I’d encourage others to join, it gives you pride and achievement looking at the things I’ve made.”
“I enjoy the program so much that I’ve increased my days.”
“I would definitely recommend the woodworking program and Adam. Adam takes the time to understand a person’s needs and what they want to produce. I feel like I’m achieving a new skill, and I can’t wait to see the end result and share it with my family and friends.”
At Glenray’s Woodworking program, we’re not just making projects, we’re making a difference!
